Seedlings Parent and Child Group
This group is for children from birth to 3 years, accompanied by their parents or carers. The group aims to provide an experience to encourage the healthy development of the very young child, following the same ethos as the kindergarten, where children learn through self directed play, and by following the example of the adults around them. The group also strives to nourish and support parents and carers in their challenging roles, as well as providing information about the Steiner Waldorf philosophy of early childhood care and education.
The Rhythm of the Morning -
The session follows the same rhythm as the kindergarten morning, beginning with a period of free play, where the children have access to simple toys made from natural materials, which encourage creativity and the development of the imagination. During this time the adults have the opportunity to take part in a simple seasonal craft activity and to share their experiences of parenting, whilst enjoying a nice cup of tea.
After this we tidy up together, then sit in a circle to sing some seasonal songs and rhymes. Then, after washing hands we sit together around the table to share a wholesome snack of warm bread rolls, rice cakes and chopped fruit, before getting ready to go outside. In the garden children have the opportunity for more free play, with sand and water, carts and wheelbarrows, spades for digging in the earth, and much more. To end the session we come together in a circle for a finger game and to sing our goodbyes.
Transition to Kindergarten -
Seedlings parent and child group is ideal for children who’s parents would like them to progress to join the kindergarten from around 3 years old, but all families are welcome regardless of whether the kindergarten is being considered. Children who have attended the parent and child group invariably experience a smooth transition into kindergarten, as the setting, the rhythm and the teachers are already familiar to them.
